Don’t Write August Off: How Smart Business Owners Use Winter to Win Spring

August has a reputation for being slow. School holidays just finished, the cold isn’t going anywhere, and it’s easy to feel like you’re just waiting for spring to arrive. But the business owners who hit the ground running in September and October? They used August to get ready.

Here’s how to make this month count.

Compare your forecast to your reality

If you set financial forecasts earlier in winter, now is the time to pull them out and hold them up against your actual bank balance. Where are the gaps? What’s changed? This comparison tells you a lot about where your business is heading and gives you time to do something about it before the pressure builds.

If you don’t have a forecast yet, don’t wait. Build a simple three-month projection using your current accounting data. It doesn’t need to be complex, it just needs to exist.

Track your cash flow daily

For businesses operating on tight margins, a monthly snapshot isn’t enough. Daily cash flow tracking gives you a real-time picture of what’s coming in, what’s going out, and what decisions you need to make today to protect next week.

As we often say to clients, information is power and it changes the decisions you make. A daily cash flow shows you your future if you don’t act. That’s not a bad thing. That’s the whole point.

Look at your team before spring hits

It’s worth reviewing your team’s capacity now, before the workload picks up. Do you have the right people in the right roles for what’s coming? Are there gaps you need to fill before you’re in the middle of a busy period? Planning staffing before you need it is always easier than reacting to it.

Choose your posture: defensive or growth?

Cash flow visibility doesn’t just protect you from problems, it gives you options. When you can see clearly what’s in front of you, you get to choose how you respond. You might decide to hold tight and manage conservatively. Or you might see an opportunity to invest and lean into growth.

Either way, that’s a decision made from a position of knowledge. And that’s exactly where we want our clients to be.

Want to talk it through?

August is one of the best times of year to sit down and look at the numbers together. If you’d like a fresh set of eyes on your forecasts before spring, get in touch and we’d love to help.
